Handling, Shot Stopping and Positioning

By Wayne Henderson - The most important attribute of a successful goalkeeper is being a good shot stopper; this simple drill will help work on a few aspects of “making saves”. First Phase Feeder number 1 strikes a simple volley straight at the goalkeeper, who catches the volley and throws the ball back to feeder number 1.

The V-Wing

By Jason Stockmann -

I’ve mentioned before that I like to design goalie drills that also use field players or a field drill that actively incorporates a goalie. These type of drills work well for any number of players, can be ideal when maybe only 1 or 2 coaches are present and add to team cohesion by increasing the trust between field players and the goalies.

Today we use this field player-goalie formula to train angles. Specifically, we will be concerned with helping our keepers learn to identify where to place themselves when a player is both coming into and shooting from the penalty box. We want to look at things like getting the right distance between the ball, the goal and any other players that may be open as well as when and how much to commit to going after the ball.

The drill I offer up today is one I call “The V-Wing” and it offers the

Positioning in the Goal

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter.  Today’s topic deals with positioning and taking advantage of the fact the center of the goal never moves.

As a general rule, a keeper wants to be centered (which means however far off his line he might be, he would be on a line from the ball to the center of the goal).  The exceptions of this would be when the ball is out wide and a few other times when a keeper choose to be off center BUT would want to know where center is.

The one constant is the center of the goal never changes so we can start by putting a cone in the center of the goal.  Then we spread some balls out around the 18.

Positioning and Shot Blocking

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on positioning and shot blocking

Too often keepers are working on cutting off angles on stationary balls. While this is a good way to start to understand the concept it's quite limiting in that it's not the way most positioning is done in a real game.

Start with a keeper in goal, a server 30 yards out with balls, and a line of attackers on each side of the server.

How to Position on Crosses

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter.  Today’s topic deals with positioning on crosses.

When we talk about positioning and angles we usually are talking about situations when the ball is toward the middle of the field.  Positioning can be figured by using string that goes from one post to the other post and then the middle is pulled toward the ball so the ball is the vertex of the angle.  The keeper then has to position himself so that he can make a save on any ball inside the string.  This usually means coming off the line and being centered within the angle.

As the ball moves, the angle changes and the keeper has

Shot Blocking and Positioning

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter.  Today’s featured activity works on shot blocking, footwork, fitness and positioning.

Start with a keeper at one post, servers with balls 8 yards out on an angle from the corners of the 6, a server at the 12 yard spot with a ball and two cones making a 4 yard wide goal 4 yards off the goal line.

The server closest to the ball starts by shooting toward the far post and low so the keeper should be able to

Recognition, Positioning and Shot Blocking

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter.  Today’s featured topic works on recognition, positioning and shot blocking.

This activity uses two cones 8 yards apart representing a goal and a keeper in the goal.  There are 6 players (3 on each side) spread out around 18 yards from goal with balls.

Play starts by one of the players taking a short touch of their ball.  This is the keepers signal so he

Positioning and Shot Blocking

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter.  Today’s featured activity works on positioning and shot blocking.

This activity is a long shot/short shot sequence that forces the keeper to react based on location and position themselves accordingly.

The keeper starts in goal and there are two lines of balls.  One line is around 15 yards from goal and the other line is 22-25 yards from goal.  The server starts just outside the far line.
