Footwork and the Drop Step

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on footwork and the drop step.

Start with a keeper in goal, a speed ladder in front of him and a server 15 yards out.

The keeper starts by taking quick steps through the ladder toward the keeper.

The server then points in a direction and the keeper takes a drop step in that direction.

gk280c

The server tosses a ball up toward the crossbar and the keeper must use proper footwork to get back and either catch the ball or push it over the crossbar.

The keeper then gets back into the goal and starts again.

Do this 5 times in each direction (different drops) and then change the pattern through the ladder (2 steps in each hole, one legged hopping, up two back one etc). There are many variations you can use but the key is for the keeper to go quickly, stay on balance and really focus on the drop step and then the following steps to get back to goal.

Have a great day!
