Defensive Shape and Passing

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on defensive shape and passing.

Start with a 60 x 40 field broken into vertical quarters. There are 4 players in each quarter, with one team in 2 quarters and the other team in the other 2 quarters.

One team starts with the ball on one end. The opposing players in the near zone defend by cutting off the passing angles wherever possible. No player can leave their own zone. The team with the ball is trying to pass the ball to their teammates in the other zone. The defending team is trying to prevent this type of a penetrating pass.

If they can make a penetrating pass, the team then tries to play back to their teammates.

If the defending team wins the ball, they then turn and try to find their teammates while the opponent tries to prevent this.

The players should be constantly shifting, both on offense and defense, to provide support to their teammates.

Really put emphasis on the defending players shape and make sure they are always aware where the ball is as well as the opposing players.

Have a great day!
