Combinations and Flank Play

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on combinations and flank play.

Start with 4 midfielders (2 central and 2 out wide) and 2 forwards. They are attacking a goal and a keeper is in the goal. The deepest central midfielder starts with the ball.

The play starts with a pass to the other central midfielder. He lays the ball back to the first player who then passes out wide.

The outside midfielder takes the ball down the side line and the two forwards and 2 of the other midfielders make runs to get into the box.

The ball gets served into the box for a first time finish

The players then go back to their starting point and do the same thing in the other direction.

Other options are for the first pass to be played into a forward who lays it off to the other midfielder and then it’s played out wide as before.

Having players think in terms of 1,2 or even 3 passes ahead is a wonderful way to help them grow as players.

Have a great day!
