Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter. Today’s featured topic works on recognition, positioning and shot blocking.
This activity uses two cones 8 yards apart representing a goal and a keeper in the goal. There are 6 players (3 on each side) spread out around 18 yards from goal with balls.
Play starts by one of the players taking a short touch of their ball. This is the keepers signal so he knows which player is shooting. The keeper then steps out to cut off the angle and make the save.
The keeper then returns the ball to the server and quickly turns and sprints through the goal to get ready for one of the three players on the opposite side to take a touch and a shot.
There is no set order for the shooters so they must communicate between themselves. The idea is for the keeper to have to constantly readjust their positioning in order to make the saves.
By doing this activity quickly it allows the keeper to work on their recognition of the situation, their positioning and their shot blocking.
