Positioning for the Long Shot

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter. Todays featured activity works on positioning, reading the game and saving long shots.

Start with a 20 x 44 grid just outside the 18. There are three groups of 3 and a keeper in goal.

Two teams are on offense (in this case the black and yellow teams) and one team is on defense (in this case the blue team). The two teams on offense get a point for each 3 consecutive passes, 2 points for any shot on goal (after 3 passes) and 5 points for any goal scored.

The sequence in the diagram above would be worth 1 point for the black and yellow teams.

The sequence in the diagram above would be worth 5 points for the black and yellow teams (since they had 3 passes and then a shot for a goal).

The blue team stays on defense for 3 minutes (make sure you have extra balls for this activity) and then there is a short break and then it’s yellow and blue vs the black team. After another 3 minutes, and a short break, then its black and blue vs yellow. At the end of the 9 minutes of play, the team with the most points wins.

While this is an excellent activity for the field players, working on possession and shooting from distance, it’s also great for the keeper. The keeper must readjust his positioning with every pass and be aware of both the current situation and also the next situation (so he must be able to read the next pass).

This activity can recreate a number of different game like situations and is a fun activity for keepers of all ages.

Have a great day!
