Playing into Target Players

Objective

This session is a directional possession looking to play forward into target players and support the play with forward runs.

Session 1

Diagram 1

Set Up

  • Two teams with 2x players from each team in the two end zones in the direction in which their team is attacking
  • The size of the pitch is dependent on the number of players
  • The target areas 5-7 x 5-7yds
    The target players must remain in the target area and they can not come out of that area
  • The teams must work the ball into the target players, when a target player receives the ball, they must transfer the ball across to the other target player for a goal to be given. See diagram 1
  • The pass across from one target player to the other can not be intercepted
  • Play then resumes with the defending team
  • The team in possession can use the opposition target players to play back to (unopposed) and the ball must travel across to the other target player before it can come back into open play
  • Switch the target players over a period of time

 

Coaching Points

  • Tempo and quality of passing
  • Movement to receive the ball, angles of support
  • Trigger / cue for movement when the ball is traveling across from target player to target player
  • Looking to play forward
  • Out of possession pressing the ball
  • Tracking runners

Set Up

  • As within the previous session
  • In order for a goal to be scored when the ball is played into a target player, a player in open play must provide the option to play a bounce pass before it goes across to the other target player. See diagram 2

Progression

  • As with previous session
  • Restrict the bounce pass to 1 touch back into the target player

Coaching Points

  • As within previous session
  • Decision whether to play a bounce pass or come back out to recycle the play
  • Balance off when in possession – low, medium and high support
  • Encourage players to provide width, depth and height

Session 3

Set Up

  • Set up as with the previous session
  • In order for the team to score a pass is played into a target player. The target player then looks to play a pass back inside to a different player who will then play a pass out to the 2nd target player. They will then play the pass across. See diagram 3

Progression

  • Must be the same player who plays the pass into the 1st target to then play a pass into the 2nd target man
  • Restriction on the number of touches for the bounce pass

Coaching Points

  • As within previous sessions
  • Forward runs to support target player
  • Change of speed to receive get the ball back
