Forward Dives

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Todays featured activity works on forward dives.

Start with a keeper in goal, a server with some balls at the top of the 18 and two field players just in front of the keeper.

The ball gets played, on the

ground, straight at the keeper.

The keeper does a forward dive to receive the ball before it gets to the field players (sorry, I don’t have a good way to show this graphically).

We really want to emphasize to the keeper the importance of getting this ball early by stepping forward and pushing off to get to the ball.

After doing this a few times switch it up so the ball gets played directly at one of the field players.

Now the keeper has to take a slightly diagonal step and then for the forward dive to get to the ball before the field player.

The forward dive is an important part of goalkeeping but it’s one that gets neglected by many in training.

Have a great day!
