Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on corner kicks, free kicks and counter attacks. This is an interesting way to work on dead ball situations while incorporating other aspects of the game of soccer. There are other variations such as these in the book Brazilian Soccer Coaching: Learn How to Train Technically Superior and Tactically Intelligent Players Training the Brazilian Way
This is a regular 11 v 11 scrimmage (or less numbers depending upon how many you have available). One team starts on offense and takes 10 corner kicks from one side. Players line up as they would in a regular game.
The attacking team (in this case the black team) makes it’s normal runs trying to score while the defending team (in this case the yellow team) works on it’s shape in defending corner kicks.
A goal scored by the attacking team counts as one point. If the defending team wins the ball they try to work the ball out of the back and if they can cross midfield with possession of the ball it counts as a point for the defending team. If the team defending the goal tries to work the ball out of the back loses the ball the attacking team keeps the attack going.
Anytime the ball goes out of play the game starts over with another corner kick.
After the attacking team takes 10 corner kicks from each side, the teams change roles and the other team takes 10 corner kicks from each side. The team with the most points at the end wins.
This game can also be played using free kicks from around the attacking half of the field instead of corner kicks.
