Conditioning With a Finishing Circuit

By Daniel Severn

This week we have an easy to set up, fun, but hard working exercise. This exercise works well using 7+ players. This game involves tons of shooting so it is always easy to get the player motivated and on your side straight away for this one. It is a very rich exercise as we see shots from different angles in situations. One v Ones, Long Range Shooting and Crossing and Finishing are all included in this exercise.

Set Up and Directions
The exercise is set up as shown below. Three lines of players are set up as shown in the diagram below. As we see in the picture, left to right, we have the One v One line, the Long Range Shooting line and the Crossing and Finishing line.

Finishing Stations1

Play begins with our first player running in a one versus one with the goalkeeper. While player one attempts the one v one, player two is performing agility through the cones.

Finishing Stations2

Our first player take a shot on goal in the one v one and then checks back towards player two, who should time his agility well to get to his ball as player one takes a shot. Player two plays a forward pass to player one and moves to show where he wants a return pass. Player one lays the ball off and player two take the shot from outside the box.

Finishing Stations3

While Players one was performing the one v one, player three was performing agility through his first station and while player two performed the give and go with player one, player three performed agility through his second station. Once player three gets to his ball and player two has taken his shot, those two players perform a give and go and player three receives the ball wide.

Players one and two make runs in the box and player three crosses for one of them to finish.

The rotation is simple, move to the cone to your right.

Timing
The timing of movement through the cones is very important and whilst the players are moving through the cones they are improving their awareness if they can see exactly where their teammate is. The more players you have, the longer the exercise can run freely. If you have 7 players (Goalie plus 6 strikers) then maybe go 2-3 minutes at a time with breaks.

Variations

  • Switch sides so that the one v one and the crossing and finishing are attempted from the opposite angle.
  • Vary the agility.

I hope you enjoy the exercise!
