Turning, Shielding and Taking Players On

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on turning with the ball, shielding and taking players on.

Start with groups of 2’s with a 30 x 10 field for each group and a small goal on each endline. There is one ball per group.

This is a simple 1 v 1 game with an interesting twist. The yellow player starts with the ball close to his goal and the black player starts right in front of him with his back to the yellow player.

The yellow player passes the ball through the legs of the black player, the black player sprints after the ball and has possession. The yellow player follows to defend.

The black player wants to retain possession by shielding the ball until he finds the opportunity to turn and take the defender on.

If the defending player wins the ball he tries to score on the other goal. Play continues until the ball goes out of play (over the sideline, a goal is scored etc) at which point whoever should have the ball starts this way (so if the black player scores, they reset with the black player passing through the yellow players legs).

This is an excellent way to work on shielding, turning and taking players on while the players have fun playing a competitive game.

Have a great day!
