The Four Yard Box

By Wayne Henderson -

This Drill is for all standards and ages of Goalkeepers and is used to improve Footwork, Movement and Shot stopping, with many variations in the type of movement used within the box and lots of different handling techniques used to save a wide variety of shots from outside the box.

Set Up

6 Yard x 6 Yard Box marked out by 4 white cones.
4 Blue cones, 4 Yellow cones and 1 central red cone.
1 Goalkeeper, 2 Feeders and 1 bag of footballs.

Feeder number 1 starts the drill with a volley; Goalkeeper catches and throws the ball back to feeder.

He / She then moves laterally across the 4 yard goal until they reach the left hand cone, they then smoothly turn 180o in an anti-clockwise direction to be facing the opposite direction.

The ‘Keeper then moves in a forwards and backward direction through the blue cones until they reach the central red cone.

When they reach the red cone they move forwards as quickly as possible to get into their set position to save the 2nd ½ Volleyed feed from feeder number 2.

Variations in footwork

2 feet between each cone facing forwards
Slalom between each cone facing forwards.
Handling Variations.
1st feed – Volley or ½ Volley
2nd feed – ½ Volley, ½ volley low, dipped feed, side volley or strike etc.
