Plyometrics and Shot Stopping

By Wayne Henderson -

A massive part of the modern day goalkeeper’s armoury is explosive power and shot stopping, the following drill is very easy to set up but very difficult to execute perfectly, both from a goalkeeper, and a coaches point of view, but if it is done well it is an extremely effective and beneficial drill.

The set up
1 goalkeeper, 2 feeders, 4 hurdles or cones. At least 4 footballs.

Goalkeeper jumps with a 2 footed take off over 1st hurdle, and after landing immediately take a slightly forward step to take his/her 1st feed - a medium height feed from hand. As shown below

After catching the ball, the goalkeeper rolls the ball to the side of the area and continues with the drill, getting back up as quickly as possible and jumping over the next hurdle and moving across to the other side to take his/her 2nd feed which is a similar feed from feeder number 2. Meanwhile the first feeder is moving backwards to get into position to make the 3rd feed of the drill from his/her side, as shown below.

The first feeder should now be in position to make the 3rd feed of the drill, as feeder number 2 makes their way back to get into position to make the last feed of the drill. As shown below.

This is a drill for older more experienced coaches and goalkeepers, the quality of the service is vital to the positive outcome of this drill.

Variations – the feeds can be low along the ground.

Coaching Points – try to maintain a positive, forward moving shape throughout the drill. As well as having good quality handling at all times.
