The Double Save

By Josh Jones-Keen -

This drill tests the Keepers reactions and ability to recover to make double saves. It’s not always possible to keep hold of the ball so sometimes we need to get ready to face the follow up shot.

Using poles make two smaller goals inside the goal. Have two Keepers in goal alternating between saving shots.  The attackers shoot only when they hear the command from the coach. The coach points left or right and the Keeper must make their way in to the appropriate goal, and the coach calls for the attacker to shoot. The coach can make it tougher by pointing right and then left for example, to get the Keeper moving before calling the shot.

The Keeper who makes the first save will make the 3rd. The Keeper who makes the 4th save will get up and get ready to face the 1st serve of the next set. .

Coaching Points

  • Recover as quick as possible – get back off the floor
  • Get down the line of the ball
  • Quick movement between points
  • Good technique on the save

From here you could change or progress to one Keeper doing a whole set and then switching with the other Keeper. You could even mix up the order of the saves to keep them thinking. Other progressions could be creating smaller goals inside the goal, with different colour cones and the coach could call cone colours out instead of pointing.
