Goalkeeper Drill for Conditioning and Shot Blocking

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter.  Today’s featured activity works on fitness, footwork and shot blocking

Start with a keeper in a goal and a server 15 years away with some balls.

gk170a
The keeper starts by sliding, side to side, to one goal post

gk170b
He then slides to the other goal post

gk170c
He then slides back to the middle of the goal

gk170d
The keeper then does 5 knees to chest jumps (this is where a person jumps off of both feet and lifts their knees to their chest) and then the server shoots for the keeper to make the save

gk170e
This is done 10 times.

Next, do the same thing but instead of knees to chest jumps, have the keeper do 5 push ups.  This is also done 10 times.

You can add in any number of variations but the key is for the keeper to do everything quickly and properly.

One suggestion is to do this in a goal that is off the field.  You will quickly ruin the goal area doing activities like these so whenever possible, move off the field to preserve the goal area for games.

Have a great day!
