Footwork, Anticipation and Breakaways

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter.  Today’s featured activity works on footwork, anticipation and breakaways.

Start with a keeper and a server.  There are 4 cones making up a 4 yard square and the server is just outside of one part of the square and the keeper is just outside the opposite side.  There is a ball 4 yards outside of each side of the square.

In this example the black player is the server and the yellow player is the keeper.

The server moves side to side within the boundaries of the sides of the square and the keeper must match him.

The server can change directions whenever he wants.

At any point the server can go outside the sidelines and as soon as they do this they try to get to the near ball.  As soon as the server breaks the extended sideline, the keeper takes a big step and then pushes off to smother the ball with a dive.

When the keeper gets the ball, he then puts it back and they then reset to start over.

In the beginning, the server should just go toward the ball and allow the keeper to win it with an emphasis on proper technique but once the keeper gets accustomed to the activity, the server starts to challenge for the ball.

This is a great activity to work on footwork, anticipation/focus and breakaway technique.

Have a great day!
