Finishing From Crosses

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on finishing crosses.

Start with a grid that is 50 x 50 with a goal on each endline. There are 4 players on the sidelines with balls. They are numbered 1-4. There is a keeper in each goal and 2 forwards in the middle.

Player 1, on the outside starts by taking a touch and then serves an early ball in for the 2 forwards to attach and try to score.

This service represents an early ball played behind the defender so it’s quick enough that the runners wont have time to organize near post/far post runs.

As soon as the ball is finished, the attackers change and head toward the other goal as Player 2 gets ready to serve

Next the attackers turn to prepare for an early serve from Player 3

Next the attackers turn to prepare for an early serve from Player 4.

This is done twice to each server so it’s a total of 8 serves and finished and a LOT of running.

Rotate in two more servers and then do again.

Next is the same activity but this time the server cuts in and takes the ball down to the end line and crosses the ball back. This gives the attackers a bit more time so they can organize into near post and far post runs.

This is done twice to each server as well.

These type of activities are excellent because they force the runners to work hard, think, time their runs and concentrate when winded.

Have a great day!
