Crossing and Finishing

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter.  Today’s featured activity works on crossing and finishing.  There are many variations you can do with this activity.  To learn more, check out the DVD Tactics & Drills For Flank Play.

Start with 2 goals 25 yards apart.  There is a keeper in each goal and a server with balls behind each goal.  There are 3 sets of 2 attacking players to the side of each goal and 1 player out wide on each end line.  Use as much width as you can.

One server starts by playing the ball out wide.  The wide player has one touch to receive the ball and then one touch to serve it.  The first two attackers are curving their runs to try to finish the serve with a first time shot

At the same time, the other group would be going in the other direction.

Some things to point out in this activity is it’s better to have the runners start a second late and then sprint into position than to start early and have to wait.  Also, the server should play the ball just like they would in a game (hard and to feet) with an occasional driven ball or chip to keep the wide player honest. Also, emphasize the wide player getting a good first touch will allow for a nice serve in.

Once the runners are done, they would switch lines and go in the other direction.

You can also have the runners be required to have a one time pass when receiving the cross.

Another option would include having a second player out wide (or even a third) and now adding an overlapping run before the serve.

Have a great day!
