Combined Crossing and Finishing

By Alex Trukan

This practice combines technical elements of finishing and crossing. This is achieved in a 1v1 scenario which replicates demands of the game. The main physical focus is to develop explosive power which is responsible for winning running duels and leads to effective delivery of the end product. For example, a player with more developed explosive power might be able to get to the through ball first and cross it into the penalty box. Combining couple of technical elements makes the practice engaging for players as well as realistic to the game.

Set-Up and directions

Organise a pitch of approximately 20 x 30 yards with two goals on the opposite ends. Set goalkeepers in goals. Divide the group into four groups of min. 4 players. Organise four starting points for the groups – two next to the goals (finishing stations) and two further away in the channels (crossing channels) on the opposite ends as shown on the diagram below. As an option, small goals might be placed at the end of the crossing channel for the defenders to finish into. Prepare sufficient supply of balls to ensure flow and intensity of the practice.

article121-1

The game starts with a coach/player passing the ball forwards in between the first two players on the finishing station. The players have to make a running duel and try to get to the ball first.

First player to the ball tries to score into the goal. He might choose to dribble further forwards or shoot from a first touch. If the second player manages to get the ball back, he also tries to finish in goal.

article121-3

As soon as the shot is made, the practice also starts on the crossing stations. A coach/player plays the ball forwards in between the two players competing for it. The players have to try and get to the ball first.

article121-4

First player to the ball delivers a cross into the box. The two attackers from the finishing station try to score from a cross. The players should rotate a station (clockwise/anticlockwise) after each repetition.

article121-5

Timing

Each player should do 4-6 repetitions (crossing or finishing) in 1-2 series. The rest between repetitions should be 1 minute and between series – 4 minutes.

Variations

  • Different movements of the strikers before a finish
  • Add a defender in the box to defend against a cross
  • Increase/decrease the length of the channel/pitch (15-40 yards)
