Catching and Footwork

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter. Todays featured activity is a simple drill that works on catching and footwork.

Start with two keepers facing each other from 5 yards apart. Each keeper has a ball in his hands.

Each keeper tosses the ball, underhand, slightly to the side of the other keeper.

The keepers then have to slide to get behind the ball coming toward them.

They keep doing the same thing as quickly as they can for a one minute period.

Some other options include changing the distance (move them closer so they are 2-3 yards apart instead of 5 yards), and changing the height of the pass (balls thrown underhand knee height or overhand head height). You can also have one handed catches at the different levels.

Some points of emphasis would be keeping on balance while shuffling to the side, watching the ball all the way into the hands and coming forward to catch the ball.

Have a great day!
