Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter. Today’s featured game works on fitness, communication and shot blocking.
Start with a 40 x 30 grid with a 4 x 4 goal in each corner
This is a 3 v 3 game plus a keeper on each team
The teams can score on either of the 2 goals they are attacking and the keeper can use his hands anywhere within 10 yards of their endline.
Because of the setup, if the yellow team attacks the goal to their left, the black teams keeper would most likely have to be in that goal.
If the ball gets switched to the other side, the keeper has to sprint to the other goal
Typically, the keepers stars off by doing a LOT of running and once they realize that isn’t fun, they will understand that this isn’t about running but rather, done properly, it’s about communication. If the can keep the ball on one side and position their teammates to not allow the switch it makes it much easier for everyone.
In the example below, the defender pressuring the ball is forcing the play to stay on that side. This allows the keeper (and other defenders) to concentrate on supporting that side..
The better the communication from the keeper, the easier for all concerned. The objective is for the keeper to understand this carries over to a full sided soccer game.
Have a great day!
