2v1 Finishing Drill

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity is a 2 v 1 in tight space to try to finish.

Start with a grid that starts at the two corners of the D and then goes out 15 yards. There is a defender and two attackers in the grid. A server starts 20 yards away with balls and a keeper is in goal.

The server starts by playing a ball into one of the two attacking players.

As soon as the player in the grid touches the ball the game is live. The players must stay within the grid and they are trying to create a good scoring opportunity. The receiving player can either turn and shoot or pass to his teammate.

While some players will be tempted to hold the ball and pass between each other the emphasis has to be on getting shots hit quickly. Make sure the players understand that a 2 v 1 situation only exists for a very short period of time in a game so they must take advantage of it quickly.

Have a great day!
