Transition with Speed Work

Objective

This is a game that can be used in the early parts of the session and can be linked within some of the speed work.

Session 1

Set Up

  • 5 v 5
  • 2x Areas (20x20yds) width of Penalty box apart. See diagram 1
    One team starts with possession; objective is to make 6 consecutive passes. The game continues until the coach blows the whistle
  • On the whistle both teams leave the area to sprint and get into the area opposite. The 1st player from a team who gets in the area will be given possession of the ball
  • The time between each sprint can be dictated by the coach depending in the physical outcome

Progressions

  • Reduce the distances between the areas and on the turnover, the team that win the ball dribble across to the other area and continue keeping possession
  • Reduce number of touches

Coaching Points

  • In possession use the full area (make the pitch big)
  • Movement and angles of support
  • Body shape open to change direction of play
  • Selection of pass where, when and how
  • Communication
  • Change of pace from one area to the next

Session 2

Set Up

  • Continued from above
  • Introduction of an additional area
  • The coach dictates which area the players go into

Progression

  • The team that win the ball decide which area to travel into
  • Different restriction of touches in each area
  • Different objectives for how each goal can be scored

Coaching Points

  • In possession use the full area (make the pitch big)
  • Movement and angles of support
  • Body shape open to change direction of play
  • Selection of pass where, when and how
  • Communication
  • Change of pace from one area to the next

Session 3

Set Up

  • Continuing from the previous session
  • In this session a goal with goalkeeper is introduced
  • When the coach blows the whistle for the teams to sprint to an area. The team that wins possession of the ball will then attack the goal
  • If the defending team win the ball the game ends and the players return to an area
  • Inforce the offside rule

Progression

  • As above with the restrictions and number of passes in each area

Coaching Points

  • As within the previous sessions
  • Mindset on next phase attacking or defending
  • Exploiting opportunities to attack and take advantage of the immediate overload
