Pure Possession

By Sean Reed -

Objective

This session is pure possession. As the sessions develop conditions are set for different ways to score a goal. This is will challenge the players, encourage them to think, be creative and be adaptable.  It is important to emphasis that the team out of possession must work hard when defending.

Set Up

  • Players are divided into two teams. The size of the pitch is dependent on the coach and the number of players involved
  • If there is an uneven number of players then one team can have an overload and this can be changed throughout the session
  • In this particular game a goal is scored by a number of consecutive passes made.
  • For example:
    • 1st Game 6 passes is a goal
    • 2nd Game 8 passes is a goal
    • The highest number of consecutive passes made in one go (team with the highest after a set period of time wins)
  • If one team has an overload that team can be restricted to a specific number of touches, whereas the team with less players can have unlimited touches

Progressions

  • Change the size of area
  • The number of touches available

Coaching Points

  • Bigger pitch in possession / Smaller pitch out of possession
  • Tempo and quality of passing
  • Decision when to pass and when to run with the ball
  • Movement to receive the ball, angles of support
  • Opening up / taking the ball on the back foot to open up the pitch
  • Change of pace with the next movement
  • Out of possession: pressure on the ball
