Goalkeeper involvement during the possession phase is growing. Most coaches try to make their teams play out from the back, straight from goal kicks, using their goalkeeper. That makes the ability to receive and pass the ball very important for the goalkeepers aspiring to make it at the highest level. In the presented below drills, goalkeepers can improve their technique and decision making.
Drill 1
Number: 4 goalkeepers
Needed: 1 ball, 2 goals
In a zone of 50x40 yards goalkeepers positioned as below. Drill starts by goalkeeper A passing to goalkeeper B (1) who moves into the space. He receives the ball and plays a long ball with the second touch (2). Goalkeeper C receives the ball and repeats the same action with goalkeeper D (3,4,5). Swap goalkeepers in pairs to work on long and short passing. Can make players kick long with the first touch.
Drill 2
Number: 4 goalkeepers
Needed: 10 balls
In a zone of 50 x 50 yards goalkeepers positioned as below. Drill starts with goalkeeper B passing the ball to goalkeeper A. He passes to goalkeeper C with his first touch. Goalkeeper C is asked to move off the ball and change his positions. That makes goalkeeper A and D who work at the same time to make the right decision and use the right type of a pass depending on the distance and the angle.
Drill 3
Number: 4 goalkeepers
Needed: 10 balls
In a zone of 50 x 50 yards goalkeepers positioned as below. Drill starts with goalkeeper B passing the ball to goalkeeper A. As the ball is played goalkeeper B or coach calls the name of the goalkeeper C or goalkeeper D. Goalkeeper A has to react and find the right one within two touches (can limit to one touch).. Goalkeepers C and D are asked to move off the ball and change their positions. That makes goalkeeper A who work at the same time to make the right decision and use the right type of a pass depending on the distance and the angle.
