Explosiveness, Fitness and Diving For Goalkeepers

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on explosiveness, fitness and diving.

Start with 3 hurdles in a line, one yard apart (the height can vary based on the size of the keepers and what you have available). A keeper starts behind the first hurdle and a server is 10 yards in front of the last hurdle with some balls.

The keeper jumps off of both feet and goes over the first hurdle and then quickly goes over the second hurdle and then the third. There should be no extra jumps between the hurdles (this means the keeper lands and then quickly takes off again between the hurdles).

gk212b

As soon as the keeper gets over the last hurdle the server plays a hard, low ball to the keepers right.

gk212c

The keepers dives and makes the save

gk212d

As soon as the save is made the server plays a high ball to the keepers left.

gk212e

The keeper has to get up and dive to make the second save.

The keeper then goes back and does this again.

Do this 5 times and then switch so the first ball is the low ball to the keepers left and then high ball to the keepers right.

The keeper can take a short break after each set but must be quick going through the sets

Have a great day!
