Dealing with Back Passes

By Josh Jones-Keen -

Warm Up

Full back passes the ball back to the Keeper. The Keeper receives the ball try to switch play to either opposite full back or if short on numbers can use a small goal.

To progress once the full back has passed the ball they must become an attacker and put pressure on the Keeper.

GK12 - 1

Coaching Points

  • Ready to receive the ball
    • Positioning - just wide of the post, down the line of the ball
    • Body shape
  • Good first touch – across body but away from goal
  • Decisions – number of touches – pressured or time
  • Asses path of approaching attacking player
  • Good pass

Another point that can be coached if you’re working with a whole squad is what the outfield players do when the Keeper is receiving the ball, this is their ‘trigger’ to get in good positions.

Technique Practice

GK12 -2
Starting from a structured start, attacking midfield over hits a pass behind the full back who turns and then plays to the Keeper who then looks to play out.

The Keepers team must then try to work their way up the pitch and try to score in the mini goals, or if you are working with more than one Keeper this session can work with two full size goals and rotate so both teams get a chance from the structured start.
