By Sean Reed -

Objective

It is important to take the opportunity when possible to include the Goalkeepers in some of the sessions delivered for the outfield players. This session focuses on a Transition / Switch of player possession

Session 1

Diagram 1

Set Up

  • 5 v 5 + 2 Gk’s
  • 2 x areas 25x25yds with a 5yd gap between the two areas
  • The Goalkeepers must remain on the outside of opposite areas. They are restricted to 2 touches and can move up and down the outside of the area
  • The two teams in the middle start in one of the areas and the ball is played in from the side by the coach
  • Unlimited touches for the players inside the areas
  • Objective: For the team to make 5 passes (including the outside Goalkeeper) then switch the play into the other GK, then both team switch into the other area
  • If the team defending win possession of the ball, they maintain possession with the area to look and make the 5 passes before switching the play

Progressions

  • Restrict the number of touches
  • If the team defending win the ball, they look to immediately switch possession into the opposite GK and make 5 passes to score a goal
  • Change the number of passes to score

Coaching Points

  • In possession use the full area (make the pitch big)• Movement and angles of support
  • Awareness of incoming players (body shape)
  • Selection of pass where and how
  • Communication
  • Out of possession working hard together to force the mistake
  • Mindset switching from attacking to defending and defending to attacking

Session 2

Diagram 2

  • 5 passes (including the GK) must be made before the ball can be switched
  • The Goalkeeper can drop out of the area to their original position but are restricted to only 2 touches and are unopposed

Progressions

  • Restrict the number of touches
  • If the team defending win the ball, they look to immediately switch possession into the opposite GK and make 5 passes to score a goal
  • Change the number of passes to score

Progressions

  • Continue from the previous session
  • Tempo of play
  • Acceleration and speed to support and recover

Session 3

Diagram 3

Set Up

  • Continuing from the previous session
  • In this session two goals 10yds outside of the area have been included
  • The goalkeepers remain on the outside of the area supporting the team in possession
  • The team in possession is looking to make 5 passes (including GK). Once they have achieved this then they can look to play a forward pass into the area for an attacking player to run onto to have a goal scoring opportunity (Offside line is the edge of the main the area they are playing in)
  • If the team scores they regain possession in the area of the goal they have scored from, if they don’t the defending team are given possession in the area they are currently in

Progressions

  • A player from the defending team can track the attacking player making the forward run
  • Develop it into a 2v2 forward and defending runs

Coaching Points

  • Recognizing when to play forward and when to make the forward run
  • Forward movement (check their run) to create opportunities for players coming from deep
  • Type and weight of pass
  • Quality / End Product in front of goal
