When to Distribute Quickly and When Not To

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter.  Today’s featured activity works on quick distribution (and when NOT to distribute quickly).

Start with a keeper in goal and a 4 v 4 situation.  There is a second goal 60 yards away.

The server starts by playing a ball to the team attacking the big goal.

This team tries to go to goal and the other team defends.

At somewhat random times the server blows his whistle which means the ball is dead and then plays a ball directly to the keeper.  The keepers team tries to counter attack as quickly as possible,

The team counters as quickly as possible and if they don’t get to goal within 10-15 seconds the server blows his whistle and the play starts over with the ball going to the team attacking the big goal.

It’s important for the players to understand this isn’t just a case of a 4 v 4 game but rather looking for the opportunities to counter.

A counter attack goal counts as 3 points.  A loss of possession counts as a negative point.  Possession but not getting to goal within 15 seconds counts as 1 point.

The keeper has to quickly make the decision of whether to play the ball quickly to get the quick goal or to slow things down to make sure they don’t lose the ball and get at least one point.

This game is all about the keepers decision making and how quickly he can make a decision and whether it’s the right decision.

Have a great day!
