Passing on the Move

We often train passing in static lines where the passes go all go in the same direction. Teaching players to pass while moving is important to transfer the techniques of passing to game situations. These exercises are ones that I've used to make the transition from static to dynamic passing.

Passing on the Move

Players pass the ball back and forth up the field receiving with the inside of their foot across their body. Players should pass the ball with the foot they receive it with every time.

Once they get to the end of the field they wait for the other players to finish and go back the other way using the opposite foot.

Coaching Points

  • Player should lead their partner with the pass
  • Players should prepare the ball forward when they receive it so they can pass it back and continue moving forward

Two Player Weave

Which foot will be used for receiving and passing in this exercise is controlled by which line of players begin with the ball. All of the passes will be with the left foot if the ball starts on the left side.

After passing across to their teammate the player overlaps the receive as they dribble diagonally toward the inside of the area. Before passing it’s important that the passer shifts the ball to their right so they can use their left foot for the pass.

The receive should control the ball with their farthest foot and take their first touch across their body to start dribbling diagonally.

Move the balls to the other line on the way back so that the players have a chance to use both feet to control and pass the ball.

Three Player Weave

The ball starts with the player in the middle of each group of three. The middle player passes to one of the players on the outside. After passing to their teammate the player overlaps the receive as they dribble diagonally toward the inside of the area. The dribbler then passes the ball to the player on the other side and the pattern continues.

The receive should control the ball with their farthest foot and take their first touch across their body to start dribbling diagonally.

Passes after dribbling from the right are made with the right foot while passes from the left are made with the left foot.

Have a great week!
