Different Ways To Train Possession

Possession and combination play is such an important part of soccer that it’s important to find different ways to work on this.  There are many variations to a game such as this.  You can see some of them in the DVD Small-Sided Games to Improve Possession.

One way to work on this is below.

Start with a 40 x 40 grid with 2 yard wide gates in each corner.

This is a with 3 teams of 4 (this also works with teams of 5 or 6 but you might want to then change the dimensions).  One team starts with a player in each corner and the other two teams are in the middle

A point is scored by passing into any of the four corners and then a teammate receiving a one time pass back from the corner player

If the opposing team wins the ball, they need to make three passes on the inside and then can try to score by passing to a player in any of the four corners.

This would be a four minute game and then one of the teams in the middle goes to the corners and the team in the corners goes to the middle.  Each team gets to play each of the other teams one time.

If teams are struggling to keep possession or to score points you can add one or two neutral players.  These players are on whichever team has possession of the ball.  As the players get more accustomed to the game, it’s common to then limit these neutral players to one touch soccer.

Have a great day!
