Attacking in Numbers Up Situations

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on attacking in numbers up situations.

Start with a 20 x 20 field with two full goals and a keeper in each goal. There should be a midfield line.

In one half is a 2 v 2 matchup and the other half has a 1 v 1 match up. There is also 1 neutral player.

The only player who can cross midfield is the neutral player who is always on the team with the ball.

The ball starts with a keeper so the neutral player positions himself to help work the ball out of the back.

The neutral player also has the option of starting off on the far side of the field to allow for a longer distribution.

At any time the neutral player can go forward or backwards regardless of where the ball is located.

This activity gives players the opportunity to work on 3 v 2 attacking and defending, 2 v 1 attacking and defending and much more. It’s extremely important the players rotate roles so everyone gets an opportunity to be the neutral player (which is the player that does the most running) as well as getting to both attack and defend in 2’s and 3’s.

There are a lot of different scenarios which can be created in this activity so be willing to stop the game for teachable moments when available.

Have a great day!
