Quick Combinations Leading to Shots

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on quick combinations to get a shot hit.

Start with a target player at the top of the 18, a center midfielder with a ball 20 yards further out and two other central midfielders providing support. There is a keeper in goal.

The ball gets played into the target player who then lays the ball off for one of the two supporting midfielders for a first time shot.

The key is the two supporting midfielders don’t wait for the ball to be layed off in order for them to make their run, they are moving with the first pass and don’t know if they will receive the ball or not.

Do this a few times (rotating players into different roles) and then add a defender on the target player.

Now the target player lays the ball off based on how the defender is positioned. He would want to lay the ball off away from the defender, if possible.

Next add a second defender behind the first.

Now we have the possibility of a 2, 3 or even 4 person combination to get the shot hit

In the beginning, if the players pre plan their attack that is fine but ideally, you want them to build up to where they are reading the situation and reacting accordingly.

Have a great day!
