Taking Players On 1v1

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter.  Today’s featured activity works on the first touch and taking a player on 1 v 1.

Start with an attacking player 30 yards from goal between two cones..  A defender is 5 yards back.  A server starts with balls, from 20 yards away.  There is a keeper in goal.

The server plays a ball to the attacking players feet (the ball should be hit with pace).  The defender is live as soon as the attacking player touches the ball.

If the attacking player stops the ball dead it gives the defender the opportunity to close the space and put the attacker under pressure.

If the attacking player takes the first touch toward goal, it gives him the big advantage.

If the attacking player takes the first touch away from goal, it allows the defender to pressure and force the attacking player away from goal.

The objective is for the attacking player to use his first touch effectively to get to goal quickly.  As soon as the shot is hit (or the ball is lost) the next two go and these two will go to the back of the line and switch roles (if done properly, this should be a very fast moving activity with very little waiting around)

Have a great day!

Lawrence
