Rectangle Passing - Up - Over - Diagonal

This week's exercises are from our book, 'Dutch Total Football'

Up-Over-Diagonal

Set Up

Similar to the previous Square drill (#10)

Rotation: go to the next position – don’t follow the long diagonal pass through the middle – instead, go to the next corner.

Organization

The starting player passes in to the middle player, who plays the ball off to the opposite corner player, who then plays a deep, diagonal ball to the opposite corner. The drill continues in the same way in the other half of the square and returns to the starting position. If you feel the players can handle two balls, start then in opposite corners, but be careful of the diagonal passes.

Coaching Points

  • The middle player can play in different ways:One touch pass2 touch with a turn2 touch with back foot pass (the back foot is the foot furthest from the passer and nearest to the next pass)
  • The set up passes should be played quickly and the diagonal pass should be well paced.
  • Corner players play one touch off receiving the diagonal pass.
