This week's exercises are from our latest book, 2 v 1 Attacking Drills & Exercises
This exercise illustrates the Double Pass pattern from a straight return pass.
In Square A attacker A initiates the move with a pass to the striker, attacker B. The pass is numbered with a 1. In Square A1 attacker B has sent the ball back to attacker A and has moved wide of the defender labeled C. The pass back is numbered with a 1 and the run by attacker B is numbered with a 2. Attacker B keeps their chest and face to the defender labeled C. This can be done if the attacker backs away from the defender as they open up the passing lane. This movement keeps attacker B's body shape open allowing them to see what the defender is doing.
In Square A2 player A makes a short dribble to commit the defender. This dribble is numbered with a 1. In Square A3 there are two possible outcomes to a well timed pass from attacker A to player B. One is for player B to take a touch forward to dribble, this option is numbered 2D. The other option is for attacker A to keep their run going and receive a return Wall Pass from attacker B. This option is numbered with a 2. This pattern is seen most dramatically at the top of the box and is used to penetrate a flat defense while creating shooting opportunities.
