Constantine-Feddema

The Constantine Drill is a valuable exercise for teams focusing on defensive organization, particularly when dealing with crosses or playing in a low block. It helps players practice first-time clearances under pressure. It is one of the favorite drills of Freehold Boro Boys Freshman Coach (and co-host of the World Class Coaching Podcast). Another great find from the United Soccer Coach’s Convention, the Constantine Drill provides excellent opportunites to work on your team’s defensive verbiage and communication as well.

To set up the drill, position your desired number of defenders (e.g., a back three or four, potentially including midfielders) inside the 18-yard box, mimicking their typical positions during a cross or corner situation. Designate one or more kick takers to deliver balls into the box from various spots, either marked by cones or chosen randomly to simulate game conditions.

The drill commences with a ball being played into the box, challenging the defenders to clear it on the first touch, ensuring it exits the designated area. This area can be the 18-yard box itself, or specific target zones marked by cones, promoting accurate clearances to targeted players or areas. Consequences, such as push-ups or laps, should be implemented if the ball isn't cleared properly or if it hits the ground

Adjust the tempo by controlling the speed of the ball delivery. For a more realistic game scenario, use multiple kick takers at different stations, varying the delivery patterns to challenge the defenders' communication and anticipation. To emphasize set-piece organization, reduce the number of kicks, allowing the defense more time to communicate and position themselves.

To increase the drill's difficulty, add one or two attacking players to contest the clearances. However, removing attackers initially allows players to concentrate on their clearing technique and communication. The drill's flexibility allows for adjustments to suit the team's specific needs
