Combinations in Attack

These two activities that focus on attacking combination play are from a session contributed to the WORLD CLASS COACHING magazine by Renato Lopes Moreira. A new edition of the magazine is available each month as a part of the Member Drills Database. The rest of this article can be found in the March 2014 issue.

1v1+2

1 v 1 + 2
Four players are on each field. Two players play against one another, creating a 1 v 1 game situation. Two players are Jokers and they will play with the player who has the ball. The Jokers can’t pass the ball to one another or shoot on goal. Play a two or three minutes game and then change roles. This exercise must be played fast so that you don’t allow the defense to recover or steal the ball. Movement without the ball by the Jokers is very important to the success of this exercise.

Variations
The Jokers are allowed to shoot on goal
Losing players change the fields in the end of the time
Limit number of touches by Jokers

Three Goal Game

4 v 4 + 2
Form two teams of four players on a reduced field. Each team defends three smaller goals  and attacks three others. Two players act as Jokers, one on each side, playing with the team who has the ball. The Jokers can’t pass the ball to one and other or shoot on goal. Each attack will create a 6 v 4  offensive situation.

The defenders may not stand still inside of the goal acting as a  goalkeeper.

This is a very tactical game, since the players have to move enough within the field to escape from markers and finding free spaces to receive a pass.
