This week's exercises are from our book, 'Coaching the 4-3-3 Advanced Tactics'
BALL CIRCULATION #2 3 v 3 + 4
The progression of the exercise is to start focusing more on positional possession and responsibilities to maintain good possession and quick ball circulation. The simple change of adding a third neutral player to make 2 neutrals on one end and 1 neutral on the other end now allows you to deal with training your two central defenders while also incorporating teaching your central attacker. In addition, it now implements directional play as there is definitely an area designated as attacking and an area designated as defending.
You now start to incorporate positional and formational training while still focusing on ball circulation, the quality and accuracy of passing, and importance of preparation and reading the game. In this exercise, the two neutral players on one end represent the two central defenders. When one defender has possession you work with the other to drop behind the ball as support.
In addition, that defender drops back so they can receive a pass across from the other defender and have the ability to step and read the game as they do. Condition these players to step in with possession if there is space for them to do so and no clear options to pass to. Continue to work with the three players in possession and the neutral player inside to keep shape and give proper support.
