6 v 3 Possession

By Sean Reed -

Objective

These sessions are based on 6 v 3 possession overloads. It's a great session to get players working, engaging them and challenging them on a number of areas, depending on the coach’s objective.

For the purposes of these session we are going to focus the coaching points on the ‘in possession’ part of it. Although please note that for that to work and for the session to be a challenge the players out of possession need to be working hard. Within most sessions there are multiple outcomes.

Session 1

  • 9 Players split into 3 team (Blue, Yellow, Red)
  • The area is in the corner of the pitch between the penalty box and the touch line (15x18 approx)
  • Initial part of the session will get the players passing and moving. Getting used to the area they are working within
  • Each team has a ball. The teams start by passing to one another within their teams, working in-between the other 2 teams
  • Manage the tempo with reducing the touches and/or encourage players to take the ball off line, dribble and turn
  • Play give-and-goes off any player from another team when available

  • Movement to receive the ball / finding space
  • Body shape when receiving the ball / next movement
  • 1st touch when receiving the ball

  • To start the teams in possession will play with unlimited touches

Variations

  • Reduce the number of touches the team in possession has
  • The team switches from defending to attacking or attacking to defending when there is an interception or the ball given away. There is an immediate transition
  • A goal can be scored with the number of consecutive passes the defending team concede before they intercept, force a mistake or win the ball
  • Number of 1-2’s played round the defending players

Coaching Points

  • As within the previous session
  • Awareness of next pass
  • Angles of support
  • Looking for the bounce player through the middle
  • Rotation and movement of players
  • Decision-making with the number of touches

Defending

  • Nearest player pressing the ball
