1 v 1 Attacking

Objective

This session will focus on players in a 1v1 attacking situation. Looking to create space in order to receive the ball, to get on the half turn, to keep possession, to play forward and to create a shooting opportunity.

Session 1

Set Up

  • Using the set up as above. Working within an area of approx 20x 30yds
  • 2 Opposing players in the middle, with 4 players on the outside
    2 Players on the outside are target players and 2 players on the side are support players
  • 1 player in the middle will attack and the other player will defend (the coach can decide on the length of time i.e. 60 secs)
  • Players will then switch with 2 players on the outside
  • The objective for the attacking player is to play the ball from one end player to the other
  • The target players are on 2 touch whereas the support players on the side are on 1 touch
  • There is no restriction on touches for the players inside

Progressions

  • The ball can not be played back to the same target man by the middle player without another player touching the ball
  • Restrict the number of touches for the players in the middle (2 touch or 1 touch)
  • The attacking player must use both supporting players before playing into the end target player

Coaching Points

  • 1st movement to create space. Take the defender away from the ball to create space for the attacker to receive the ball
  • 1st touch to take ball away from defender toward next pass
  • Pass – safe side from the outside into the middle player

Session 2

Set Up

  • Area size – 20x 30yds
  • 2 players within the area (2 attacking / 2 defending)
  • 2 target players either end playing with the attacking player
  • The attacking players remains as the attacker for set period of time (i.e. 60secs)
  • A goal is scored by the attacking player if they can play from one target player to the other
  • The players on the outside have 2 touches

Progression

  • Restrict the number of touches
  • If the defending player wins the ball they become the attacking player
  • 1 touch on the outside
  • Can’t play back to the target player who has just played the attacking player the ball

Coaching Points

  • As within the previous session
  • Decision whether to turn or play back to then receive again
  • Positive 1v1
  • Create a yard to play a forward pass
  • Target players on the end looking to move up and down to provide an angle to support

Session 3

Set Up

  • Working with the goal area
  • Area width of 6yd box and 10 -15yd outside the penalty box
  • 2 players working (attacker v defender)
  • 2 target players to support and play into the attacking player
  • Attacking player must receive the ball outside the penalty box
  • The attacking player can use the target players, before the ball can come back in it must be transferred across to the 2nd target player on the angle
  • 2 touch for the target players
  • The defender is looking to clear the ball out of the area or force a mistake, if they win possession and play into one of the target players to score a point

Progression

  • Play with offside line within the area (if player is looking to run forward to receive from a target player

Coaching Points

  • As within the previous session
  • Movement to create space to receive the ball
  • Forward runs to receive the ball
  • Positive in 1v1
  • Looking to create shooting opportunity
