The Benefits of Explosive Training

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on explosiveness training.

Three things keepers really need to work on are:

  1. Being more explosive with their legs
  2. Getting down for low balls quickly
  3. Improving their range on extension dives.

This activity works on all three of the above items.

Start with a keeper in goal with 2 hurdles, a yard apart, in front of the keeper. There is a server with balls near the top of the 18.

The hurdles can be as high as you have available (and as high as the keeper can handle).

The keeper starts by jumping over the first hurdle.

Then jumping over the second hurdle.

As soon as the keeper lands the server plays a hard low ball to the keepers side.

The keeper must get down quickly to make the save.

As soon as the save is made, the server plays another ball up high to the other side.

When the keeper makes this second save he returns the balls, then goes back to do it again.

Do this 5 times with the low ball being played to the keepers right and the high ball being played to the keepers left and then 5 times with the low ball being played to the keepers left and the high ball being played to the keepers right.

The jumps over the hurdles are working on the explosiveness, the first ball is working on getting down low and the second ball is working on the extension dives. Put a big focus on everything being done properly and while you want the transition from jumping to diving for the low ball to diving for the high ball to be quick, there isn’t a rush for the next set.

Have a great day!
