This week's images are from 'Improving Your Team's Possession Play'.
The 4 v 2 exercise is dynamic movement that emphasizes both sharpening and open body shape. These are two of the one word commands that are essential to possession soccer, "open" and "sharpen." 4 v 2 also teaches left/right/split, the three word direction that creates the shape around the game. This is the basic shape of the game. Add a good first touch away from pressure and the players are practicing soccer for possession. Two defenders can't take all three passing choices away.
While prolonged dribbling to beat defenders is not suggested or the real purpose of the 4 v 2 exercise a player in possession of the ball in a real match that can choose to dribble further complicates decisions for the defenders.
