Sharpening the Angle

This week's images are from 'Improving Your Team's Possession Play'.

Players are playing on the lines between the cones in the “4 versus 2” exercise and not standing on the cones in each corner which is often taught. This allows the players to slide up and down the lines to maintain a good “sharpened” position in support of the ball. This is the dynamics of soccer. In review “sharpening” means that there is a passing lane from the ball to the receiving player that the defender can not cut out or defend. If the attacker is behind a defender or the lane to the attacker can be defended by a foot being stuck out they are not “sharpened” enough to play possession soccer.

The player will usually need to move towards the ball carrier if they are supporting on the left or the right. They should come with an “open” body shape so they can see where they will want to play the ball next.
