Correct Spacing to Build Out of the Back

By Danny Carvalho

Warm up – Activity 1
Start with small-sided scrimmages (3v3 or 4v4) to get them enthusiastic and excited about the practice. This is a great format to get loads of touches and build from the back a lot of times. As they get on fire, you move on to the next activity.

Activity 2
Coach will spread six yellow disc cones and six red disc cones. At this point, players are only going to work unopposed with the idea of point A (starting spot) and point B (end spot). Each of six field players will position themselves right next to a yellow cone. As the coach blows the whistle, they will quickly run to a red cone and the GK in possession will choose one of them to pass/throw the ball to, starting the game situation. Players will creatively work the ball up to finish on the opposite goal.

Activity 3
Same format and structure as activity 2, but now working versus three opponents.

Activity 4
Scrimmage 7v7 to transfer the new knowledge to a realistic game scenario.
