Changing the Direction of Play - Part 2

Objective

This session focuses changing direction of play. Looking to exploit space, create overloads in order to maintain possession to play forward. Part 2

Session 1

Diagram 1

Set Up

  • Possession 7 v 7
  • Within an area 9 grids of 20x15yds
  • 8 completed passes = a goal
  • Unlimited touches then restrict touches
  • No more than 2 players from each team can be in one grid

Coaching Points

  • • Tempo of play
    • Awareness of 1st and 2nd movement
    • Angles of support / distances
    • Body shape to receive
    • End product (type of pass)
    • Communication

Session 2

Set Up

  • • Continue with the previous session
    • A goal is scored when 2 players combine within the same area. Then a pass is completed to another player within another area
    • If players are unable to combine the team continue to keep possession of the ball
    • Restrict the touches to 2-3 touch

Coaching Point

  • • Tempo of play
    • Awareness of 1st and 2nd movement
    • Angles of support / distances
    • Timing of movement to support
    • Decision-making to combine or move the ball on
    • Body shape to receive
    • End product (type of pass)
    • In possession make the pitch bigger
    • Communication

Session 3

Diagram 3

Set Up

  • • As with the previous session.
    • To score a goal 3 players must touch the ball in the same grid and a completed pass to a player in another grid
    • If players are unable to combine the team continue to keep possession of the ball
    • Unlimited touches then restrict the touches to 2-3 touch

  • • Tempo of play
    • Awareness of 1st and 2nd movement
    • Angles of support / distances
    • Timing of movement to support
    • Decision-making to combine or move the ball on
    • Body shape to receive
    • End product (type of pass)
