Attacking With Speed and Defensive Communication

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter.  Today’s featured activity works on attacking with speed and defensive communication.  This is a nice progression on attacking and defending and similar type progressions can be found in the book Modern Attacking & Goalscoring.

The first part of this progression has three attacking players start 40 yards from goal.  The middle player has a ball.  Two defending players start on the end line at the corners of the 6.  There is a keeper in goal.

This is a standard 3 v 2 to goal with the one condition being the attackers only have 7 seconds to get a shot hit.  This 7 second rule is simply to encourage the attackers to go at speed and for the defenders to understand one of their primary responsibilities is to slow down the attackers to allow support to get back.

After a few attacks we go to the next step in this progression.  Add two more defenders who start 50 yards from goal.

As soon as the attacks start the two defenders on the end line come out to defend and the two defenders starting further out sprint back to defend.

The attackers are trying to attack quickly, before the two additional defenders get back.  The two defenders starting on the end line are working on getting out fast and slowing down the attackers till support can arrive.  The two defenders starting near midfield are working on getting back into a supporting position.  The keeper is working on organizing the defense and communication.  This is a great way to work on a lot of things in a short period of time.

Next, add another goal at midfield so now, if the defending team wins the ball, they counter attack 4 v 3 to the other goal.

Make sure each player gets experience in each position.

This is a nice progression on attacking and defending and similar type progressions can be found in the book Modern Attacking & Goalscoring.

Have a great day!
