Attacking and Counter-Attacking

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on 3 v 2 attacking and 2 v 1 counterattacking.

On a 40 x 30 grid, with full sized goals and a keeper in each goal, have attacking groups of 3’s and defending groups of 2’s.

The keeper with the attacking team starts by playing the ball in for a 3 v 2 toward the opposite goal.

The attacking team goes at full speed and the defending team tries to slow the attack down.

If the attacking team loses the ball the central player defends and the other two players leave the field

This results in a 2 v 1 in the other direction.

When that attack is over, 5 new players enter the field of play.

The idea is for the 3 v 2 to attack at speed but also to use the space. They might play the ball wide, and have that player cut in to create an overlap or quickly switch the point of attack. Then on the counter attack they should try to catch the one defending not paying attention.

This is an extremely fast moving activity that works on many aspects of the game.

Have a great day!
