1 v 2 Transition Game

This practice is aimed at developing explosive power – fitness component responsible for quick bursts to the ball, 1v1 duels and sharp recovery after losing the ball. This conditioning component is improved by developing body’s ability to use more fuel, leading to delivering more explosive power. This is achieved in a 1v2 counter attack scenario in which attacking player tries to score against two recovering defenders – one from the side and one from behind. This recreates realistic situation players encounter upon winning the ball back and trying to break out quickly. From technical point of view, this practice focuses on running with the ball, dribbling as well as finishing abilities.

Set-Up and Directions

Organise a 25 x 40 yards pitch with two goals. Place three cones marking out starting positions as shown on the diagram below. Divide the team into three groups – two attacking, and one defending. Organise goalkeepers in goals and groups on their respective starting points. Prepare a sufficient amount of balls to ensure intensity and flow of the practice.


The practice starts with a coach (or spare player) passing the ball into first attacking player. As soon as the pass is played, two defenders (one from each group) can start and try to win the ball back.

The attacker attempts to score in the goal further away from the recovering defender from behind. This should be done at the highest intensity with running with the ball encouraged before a finish.

In case defending pair wins the ball, they should try to score in the opposite goal as soon as possible. The whole 1v2 continues for a max. of 6 seconds. After a goal is scored or the ball goes out, next 1v2 should be started with new players.

Timing

Every player should get 4-6 repetitions in 1-2 series. Active rest interval between repetitions should be 1 minute, and between series – 4 minutes.
