Warm-Up For Hands and Footwork

By Lawrence Fine, Author of the FineSoccer Coaching Bible.

Welcome to the Goalkeeping Newsletter. Todays featured activity is a great warm up for working on hands and footwork.

Start with 4 cones in a 3 x 3 square. A keeper is at one of the back cones and a server is 10 yards in front of the cone with a ball.

The keeper starts by sliding side to side to the other back cone and then sprinting forward to the front cone

When the keeper gets to the front cone the server plays a ball right at the keeper for an easy save.

gk198c

The keeper then returns the ball, runs backwards to the back cone, slides to the other back cone then forward to the front cone.

gk198d

The ball gets served and the keeper makes the easy save.

This is done for a 1 minute period and then the keeper rests for a 1 minute period.

Next do the same thing but this time the ball is served as a high ball. The keeper has to go up, call keeper, and make the catch then returns the ball. This is also done for a 1 minute period.

Next do the same thing but this time it’s a driven ball at the keepers feet and the keeper has to do a forward dive to make the save. Again, this is done for a 1 minute period.

Next do the same with simple collapse dives.

You can do any number of variations of this activity and it’s a good way to get the keeper moving, get a lot of touches and emphasize proper technique while getting a bit of a work out in.

Have a great day!
